Program Description
The School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison was the first Ph.D. granting School of Pharmacy in the nation. Our Pharmaceutical Sciences Ph.D. Program provides a rigorous background in a range of scientific disciplines that are critical to the success of modern pharmaceutical scientists in industry, government, and academia. With 30 faculty trainers and approximately 65 students, our interdisciplinary program combines pharmaceutically relevant aspects of disciplines such as chemistry, biology, and engineering. Our students earn a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a concentration in one of three research cores: Drug Discovery, Drug Action, or Drug Delivery. Individuals from a wide variety of undergraduate academic fields have found a graduate research “fit” within Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Other Admission Requirements
3.0
We use a holistic approach to reviewing applications to our program and therefore consider all parts of the application during our review process. Sustained involvement in quality laboratory research is highly valued by the Admissions Committee. Beyond applicants’ research experience and academic achievements, there are multiple factors for admission. These include letters of recommendation, the personal statement, communication skills, and leadership ability.
The personal statement should include information on:
Why you would like to pursue graduate study
How you have prepared for graduate school including past and current research experiences
Why you are applying to our program specifically including what your potential thesis research interest(s) are
Anything else you think would be useful for the admissions committee to know to evaluate your application
